Landscaping and Lawns
Weeds and invasive plants are the bane of every landscaper, whether in a small backyard or large park. Hand weeding takes endless amounts of time. Controlling invasive species is nearly impossible. Chemical herbicides are toxic and black plastic is bad for the soil.
There’s a better way and we are pleased to say that we have been helping many local councils across the UK, construction companies, The Royal Parks of London and many independent landscapers achieve the projects they've designed whilst using a sturdy yet biodegradable solution.
Every project is different, some landscapers choose to use the paper mulches, knowing that they are seasonal and the the area is not very weedy and won't be walked on much. Paper mulch can smother most weeds, especially if an additional layer of woodchip or bark is being applied on top. But for very invasive areas, always advised to dig up and cut down as much as possible. Using sharp scissors, you can easily trim the paper to your garden space, it's easy to shape the paper to fit around trees and shrubs.
The product that has become most popular and synonymous with our landscaping clients has to be the Heavyweight Cornstarch. This is more like a fabric is the sweet spot between not wanting to use plastic but needing something that will last longer but not be bad for the soil and will eventually biodegrade. For studier projects, the heavyweight cornstarch is perfect, it will take at least 36 months to even begin to start breaking down. It's permeable to air and water, so it's breathable for the soil but still blocks the weeds. It can simply be left in the soil to do its thing.
Landscape Application Tips
- Prepare the area by removing unwanted rocks and debris
- If time permits, always advised to de-weed but this is not always possible for large areas.
- So apply the paper mulch or cornstarch membrane directly over weeds / grass / soil etc..
- Cover entire planting area with the mulch product, overlapping edges
- Weigh down edges so the wind doesn't catch
- If using the paper mulch and you have surplus, two layers works wonders
- Use sharp scissors to trim product to your garden space
- Fit around trees and shrubs
- Use a dibber to punch a hole through the paper and soil layers if placing plants in desired locations
- Cover the area with a layer of soil / bark / woodchips for a beautiful finished look
- When using the cornstarch, metal ground pins are very effective.
